WARDOGS Early Access Review: 100-Player Tactical FPS Where Cash Is King
Bulkhead and Team17's WARDOGS enters Steam Early Access on September 10, 2026. It is a 100-player, three-team tactical shooter built on a loadout economy instead of a killstreak ladder. Here is what is confirmed, what the beta showed, and who should buy in now.
WARDOGS launches into Steam Early Access today, and it is not trying to be another 64-player conquest clone. Developed by BULKHEAD and published by Team17, it pitches itself as a "tactical all out warfare" FPS where one hundred players split across three teams fight over a control zone, set in the derelict industrial mountains of Eastern Europe on a destructible battlefield.
The structural idea is borrowed from a mod, and openly so. The game takes direct inspiration from the Arma 3 mod "King of the Hill," splitting 100 players into three factions who contest a 2x2 kilometre territory inside a 256-square-kilometre sandbox map, with the team holding the most bodies in the control zone scoring the point. Three-way pressure changes the math of every engagement — pushing a contested zone usually means exposing your flank to a faction you were not shooting at.
What separates WARDOGS from its milsim peers is money. Every player starts with $10,000, and the whole design is built around a "cash is king" loop. Each life you buy a custom loadout from a pool of weapons, gear, utility items and vehicles, and cash is rewarded for teamplay actions — reviving squadmates, ferrying friendlies to the zone, or holding the objective itself. That flips the usual incentive structure: the medic and the transport driver earn spending power, not just the top fragger. Bulkhead also says solo playstyles remain viable, with a sniper covering an advance being as situationally valuable as a coordinated squad push.
Two practical points matter for buyers. Performance was a stated priority, with the team targeting a 60 FPS minimum so the game stays playable on lower-end hardware — a real concern for a 100-player Unreal Engine 5 title. The Early Access build also ships with vehicles, logistics systems, support-focused gameplay, and proximity voice chat. Second, expect thin fiction. The setting is a fictional location inspired by modern-day Georgia, but narrative is not a focus. Verdict so far: WARDOGS is the most interesting large-scale shooter of the month precisely because its economy rewards the unglamorous jobs. It is explicitly a work in progress developed alongside player feedback, and the Standard edition runs $39.99 with a Supporter Edition at $49.99. Buy in now if you want to shape a milsim-lite that is trying something structurally new; wait if you need a finished feature set.
